Ms. Ruth M. Chastain, 91, of Nixa, Missouri, passed away Monday, December 5, 2011 at Cox South Hospital, Springfield, Missouri. She was born November 24, 1920, the daughter of Joseph M. and Alta L. (Wilson) Chastain.

Ruth was a World War II veteran of the Women's Army Corps. She graduated from Hurley High School, Southwest Missouri State College (now Missouri State University) with a degree in elementary education and later obtained a degree in library science from University of Illinois at Urbana. She started her teaching career at Union City School where she taught grades 1-8. She later moved to Rockford, Illinois, and retired from Rockford School Systems. After retiring she moved back to this area to be near family.

Preceding her in death were four brothers, Edgar and James, who died in childhood, Johnny, who was killed while serving in the army during the Korean War, and Bill Chastain. Also, one sister, Cleda Jones and her husband Chloe; nephews, Jim Chastain, Jamie Jones, and Nicholas Wilson; a niece Debbie Hillis; and her parents.

She is survived by: three brothers, Joseph and wife Vivian, Rockford, Illinois, Don and wife Juanita of Billings, Missouri, David and wife Joyce of Highlandville, Missouri; also, three sisters, Mary Gilmore and husband Johnny, Clever, Missouri, Thelma Bates, Ballwin, Missouri, and Carol Sullins and husband Claud, Branson, Missouri; several nieces and nephews who all loved and respected her very much.

There will be a memorial service to celebrate the life of Ms. Chastain at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, December 11, 2011 in Meadors Funeral Home, Clever, with Rev. Joe Chastain officiating. The visitation will follow the service.
