"Diedrich J. Burfeind was born at Kutenholz, Stade, Niedersachsen, Germany on June 19, 1863 to Diedrich Burfeind and Catharina Hink. He is the youngest of four children. Mette, Frederich and Margarete are his older siblings. Frederich passed away the year he was born. Mette and Margarete remained in Germany. This information comes from their church history in Germany. Diedrich emigrated to the US on August 27 1880 from Bremen, Germany arriving at New York, NY.
He was 17 years old when he arrived in the USA. He traveled on the ship Rhien. His stated purpose was not citizenship. Maninfest id number 35766. He traveled in steerage. He was to work for his Uncle whom we find in Minnesota according to 1880 census records. Yet we find that he stayed in the US and applied for citizenship.
Diedrich married Martje Van Gerpen on October 14, 1888. The couple established a farm northwest of Tyndall, Dakota Territory and farmed that land until they moved to Avon sometime prior to 1920. Dick and Maggie were baptized in a farm creek, near what was later to become Avon, SD in 1888. The First Baptist Church of Avon had it's start in their farm home. It was decided that a church building should be constructed. Dick and Maggie were part of 24 charter members of this church. They faithfully served at the church for the rest of their lives. This information is found in the 1990 history book compiled by the First Baptist Church of Avon, SD.

Diedrich and Martje were blessed with with nine children: Richard, William, Herman, Fannie, Kathryn, Margaret, Grace, Mary and Bertha.

Diedrich passed away November 24, 1950 and is buried next to his bride Martje at the Avon Baptist Cemetery.

Blessed be your memory Great Great Grandpa Burfeindt.
