Colleen Manuel Schmidt, 88, formerly of Pulaski and Christiansburg, VA, departed this life on Sunday, January 15, 2012, after a long struggle with Alzheimer's. She was at home with her daughter's and son-in-law in Hanover PA. Mrs. Schmidt was born on August 28, 1923.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Arthur Schmidt. She was the daughter of Kelsey Sampson Manuel and Eula Coalson Manuel. Her two brothers and two sisters and their spouses also predeceased her: Lawrence Eugene Manuel, Kenneth and Elsie Manuel, Maudeleen and James Saunders, and Dorothy and Gerald Andrews.

She is survived by her daughter, Diana Richardson-Butler and her husband Thomas Butler of Hanover Pa. and a grandson John Nicholson and his partner Tiffany Atlas of Philadelphia.

Also surviving are a step-son Fred Schmidt and his wife Kitty of Carmel, Indiana, a step-grandson Jonathan Schmidt and his wife Scarlett of Middletown, Delaware and a step-grand daughter Theresa Schmidt Weaver and her husband John of Carmel, Indiana. She is also survived by three step-great granddaughters Sydney Schmidt and Ellen and Sarah Weaver. Mrs. Schmidt also leaves behind many nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Schmidt worked for many years as payroll and insurance clerk at Coleman Furniture Company and later at Pulaski Furniture Corporation. She spent most of her life caring for others. She had been an avid reader and enjoyed old Westerns and Detective shows on TV. She was a graduate of the Pulaski High School Class of 1941.

Mrs. Schmidt was a one of the founding members of Our Savior Lutheran Church of Christiansburg, VA, along with her husband Carl. She was also a past member of the First Baptist Church of Christiansburg and First Baptist Church of Pulaski.

Funeral services will be conducted at Our Savior Lutheran Church of Cambria/Christiansburg, Virginia on Monday, January 23, 2012 at 11 AM, with Rev. Fred Hodges officiating. Burial to follow in the Oakwood Cemetery in Pulaski. Friends are invited to visit with the family before the funeral at the church beginning at 9:30 on Monday.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to Our Savior Lutheran Church.
