Enlisted in 1754 in war between France & England; captured at Quebec; nearly died in prison there; was placed on a ship bound for France, he and his cohorts took over the ship and instead sailed to England; returned to Ipswich, married and went to Hopkinton where most of his children were born; served in the Revolution in 1775 with his eldest son John; wood engraver, worked in leather making shoes and boots.
