The daughter of Pierre Aubrey de Gouges. She was the grand-daughter of Olympe de Gouges, who was a French playwright and a political activist, who advocated better slave conditions in the colonies and basically equal rights for French women to French men. She wrote many political pamphlets. She went to the guillotine during the French Reign of Terror.

Charlotte's father took his wife and five children to Gayana. He died there. Charlotte's mother attmpted to take her children back to France but to no avail. Charlotte then married Robert Seldon Garnett.
