Benjamin Dudley Cooper, 68, Keytesville, was fatally injured about 10 o'clock Friday when he was struck by a truck while he was walking across Highway 24 about 1/4 mile west of Keytesville.

The truck, traveling east at the time of the accident, was driven by John Henry Grotjan, Dalton.

An inquest was held at 10 o'clock Saturday.

Mr. Cooper, who sustained a fractured skull and died immediately, had gone out with Earl Banks, also of Keytesville, to pick up hay along the highway. The two men were walking on opposite sides of the highway when Mr. Cooper started to cross the highway. The truck struck him as he was crossing.

Mr. Cooper was born July 1, 1881, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin A. Cooper. He was a member of the Helena Christian Church. A former sheriff of Chariton County, he served on the draft board of World War II. He had owned a feed store and more recently a grocery store in Keytesville. Mr. Crooper had been a semi-invalid for several years and was retired from business.

Surviving him, besides his widow, are nine children: Charles, Virgil, and Melvin of Elkhart, Ind.; William of Macon; Elwood of Keytesville; Mrs. Verne Baker, Mrs. Lelia Brinkman, and Mrs. Gordon Teller of Davenport, Iowa; and Mrs. Jakie Teller of Fayette.

Surviving also, are 18 grandchildren and four sisters: Mrs. Elsi Carr of Slater, Mrs. Grover Neighbors of Brunswick, Mrs. Clarence Kneven of Glasgow, and Mrs. Ruby Whitton of Stillwater, Okla.

The funeral was held Monday at 11 a.m. at Asbury, with the Rev. Cline of the Methodist Church officiating.
