Eva Aul née Zwergel: 1822-1878
In the Hessian village of Horbach on Thursady of the 25th of April in the early morning hour of 5 a.m in the year 1822, the crying sounds of a new born baby girl, just delivered by its mother, Maria Catharina Schaffrath could be heard for the first time. The father, Johannes Georg Zwergel later that day had the baby baptized at the community's Catholic church of St. Anna's in the neighboring town of Somborn. This was the couple's third child, but first born daughter which they christened with the name of "Eva". The young maiden grew to adulthood and eventually married with another inhabitant from Horbach, named Johannes, the son of the bricklayer, Johannes Georg Aul & his wife, Theresia, who was born Franz. Although Johannes was two years younger than his bride to be, this union was consecrated around the year 1845 in the newly built church of St. Michael's, which was located in their village of Horbach. A year later on the 12th of May 1846, they were blessed with their first born, which they named in honor of its father, Johannes. Within three months of the birth, this young family was in the seaport city of Bremen, embarking onto the full-rigged three masted Ship "Copernicus" destined for the port of Baltimore, Maryland in America. Sailing away with other family members from their homeland forever, they finally arrived about two months later on the 3rd of October 1846. This small group of immigrants were "chain migrating" to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where 8 years earlier, Eva's brother, Johannes Adam Zwergel, accompanied with Peter Biehl, a 1st cousin to Eva's husband had previously immigrated to. Eva and her family remained residents of Philadelphia for the next 10 years, all the while increasing their family by having three more children: Elisabeth, Margareth & Georg respectively, and baptizing them all at the neighborhood Catholic church of St. Peter the Apostle located in the "Olde Kensington" neighborhood of Philadelphia. In May of 1856, Eva's mother-in-law, Theresia, came from Germany to live with them in Philadelphia. Two years later, the Aul family decided to pick up stakes in Philadelphia and made the move to Niles, Michigan, where Eva's brother, Adam Zwergel was now living. In Michigan Eva had four more children with her husband, for a total of eight, namely: Julia, Katie, Frank, & Henry. According to the 1860 & 1870 Federal census', Eva's husband's occupation during this time in Niles, Michigan was as a Saloon/Tavern Keeper. Eva's husband lived to the age of 46 dying on the 4th of Oct. 1871. He was interred in the family plot at Saint Joseph Mission Cemetery in Bertrand, Michigan, where his mother, Theresia and son, Henry were buried earlier. Eva survived her husband by about eight years dying at the age of 56 on the 29th of July in the year 1878. Eva's final resting place was next to her husband, John in the family plot in Bertrand, Michigan.
