Theresia Aul née Franz: 1789-1858
In the spring of 1789, the first born of Georg Adam Franz, a local blacksmith & his wife, Maria Elisebetha Heilmann was delivered to them that Wednesday on the 6th of May from the small village of Neuses, the ancestorial home of the Franz family. Neuses was located in the "gemeinde" or municipality of Freigericht, under the jurisdiction of the Landgraviate of Hesse-Kassel and at that time a member of the Holy Roman Empire. On that very same day of the birth, the newborn was taken to the catholic church of St. Anna in the neighboring village of Somborn and anointed with the sacred oils of baptism, whereby the name of Theresia was bestowed upon her. She was the eldest of seven siblings consisting of three sisters, namely Elisabetha, Margaretha, & Maria Elisabetha with the addition of a brother name Heinrich. Two other siblings, both named Anna Maria did not survive childhood. Theresia was raised in the nearby village of Horbach, which was also part of the community of Freigerricht. At the age of 21, on the 13th of January 1811, she wed Johann Georg Aul, who was also a resident of her village. It was known that she conceived one daughter & two sons that lived to adulthood: Elisabetha, on the 16th of July 1811, Christophor, on the 29th of Nov. 1816 and Johannes on the 15th of Sept. 1824. Her other five children, 2 girls & 3 boys all died in childhood. Shortly after the birth of her last child, her husband passed away at the age of 42 on the 14th of Feb 1828. Her youngest son, Johann at the age of 20 married the 22-year-old, Eva Zwergel in the catholic church of St. Michael's that was newly built in their village of Horbach. Two years later on the 12th of May 1846, Theresia became a grandmother, when her son, Johann & Eva gave birth to their first child, a boy that they named Johann after its father. Three months after that, Johann & Eva decided to immigrate to America, the "land of opportunity", with Johann's 1st cousin, the Michael Biehl family also of Horbach. The young Aul & Biehl families made their way to the port city of Bremen. After booking passage on the 5th of August 1846, they all embarked on the full rigged three masted sailing ship "Copernicus" bound for America. Sailing for almost two months, they finally disembarked at Baltimore, Maryland on the 3rd of October 1846. Both families then made their way to Philadelphia, where they had since 1838 relatives already living there, when Peter Biehl, brother of Michael & Johann Adam Zwergel, brother of Eva had both immigrated to Philadelphia together. Peter Biehl, a cobbler by trade was well established then in the Kinsington neighborhood of Philadelphia with his family. Eva's brother, Adam Zwergel married in 1841 and relocated to Michigan soon after with his wife's family. Over the course of eight long years that Theresia was separated from her family in America, she desperately wanted to reunite with them and be with her unseen grandchildren. Her opportunity came in 1854, when her 20-year-old nephew, Heinrich Franz sailed with her on the ship "Louise Marie" from Bremen bound for Philadelphia. Disembarking on the 4th of May 1854, she was finally reunited with her family. About two years later, the Aul family decided to pick up stakes in Philadelphia and make the move to Niles, Michigan, where Eva's brother, Adam Zwergel was now living. Theresia was only living in Niles, Michigan for about two years before her death in 1858 at the age of 68. At the time of her passing, Theresia remained a widow for over 30 years. Interment was in the family graveyard at Saint Joseph Mission Cemetery in Bertrand, Berrien County, Michigan.
