Irving Walter Hedges, 72, of Cedar Rapids, a former resident of Iowa City, died Wednesday at a Cedar Rapids hospital following a lengthy illness. The funeral will be at noon Saturday at Turner Chapel East. A Masonic Service will be held at that time by Crescent Lodge No. 25. Visitation has begun at the chapel.
Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Cedar Rapids, Crippled Children's Hospital Fund of the Shrine, Daughters of the Nile, Eye Foundation Fund of the Beauceant Order or York Rite Bodies.
Mr. Hedges was born April 9, 1905, at Iowa City. On April 26, 1970, he married Elsie Moffatt at Cedar Rapids. He moved to Cedar Rapids from Iowa City eight years ago. He was a retired employee of the University.
He was a member of St.Paul's United Methodist Church, Crescent Masonic Lodge, El Kahir Shrine, Shrine Foot Patrol, Malta Chapter of Eastern Star, York Rite, Palestine Council, Ambar Grotto, White Shrine, Iowa City Shrine, Hi Twelve Club, master of the third veil and second guard of Trowel Chapter and third guard of Apollo Commandery.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Irving of Shreveport, La., and Philip of Ocean Springs, Miss.; two step sons, Dennis B. Moffatt of Winfield, Ill., and Donald Moffatt of Cedar Rapids; a stepdaughter, Nadine Moffatt Bunge of Waterloo; three sisters, Margaret Luthey, and Eleanor Woode, both of Iowa City and Lucille Plante of Tucson, Ariz.; two brothers, Wilson R. Hedges of DeLand, Fla., and Elmer J. Hedges of Tucson, Ariz.; five grandchildren; and nine step grandchildren.
