OBITUARY:
NEWSPAPER WORKER DROPS OUT OF RACE
John S. Browning Responds to His Last Assignment—Had Been Sufferer With Heart Trouble for Many Years—Born in England but Reared in Cambridge John S. Browning, one of the older school of journalists, who had made his home in this city for many years, passed away Wednesday afternoon at his home, 19 Trowbridge street. He had been a sufferer from a heart trouble for the past eight years, and had been confined to the house since last December.
Mr. Browning was born January 17, 1860, in Shaftesbury. Eng. He came to this country when little more than 2 years old, and was naturalized as soon as he became of age. He attended the Webster Grammar school and the Cambridge High school, and had been president of the respective alumni associations of the schools, contributing clever verses on the occasions of the reunions. He attended, also. Raymond's Boston School of Oratory.
Early in life lie learned the printing trade, and was at one time employed in the proofreading department of the Hand-Avery company. He became a reporter for the Cambridge Chronicle, and later was editor and publisher of the Hyde Park Times and the Cambridge Gazette, and city editor of the Cambridge Daily. The last two publications are now out of existence.
He joined the staff of the Boston Globe in 1889, as a news editor, later reported the sessions of the state senate, and in 1888 became commercial editor of the paper, which position he held for eight years. Subsequently he assumed the editorship of Practical Politics, and was associate editor of the Boston Commercial.
When the Christian Science Monitor was established Mr. Browning became a news editor on its staff, but later took up with local newspaper work again. He had been Boston correspondent for several New York- publications.
He will be remembered by all who were ever associated with him as a quiet, industrious worker, painstaking and accurate, and a genial, kindly man. Mr. Browning married, October 19, 1686, Miss Anna W. Smith, of Dover, N. H, who survives. His daughter, Miss Natalie A. Browning, graduated from Radcliffe college in the class of 1913. Mr. Browning is survived also by his mother, Mrs. Francis Browning, of this city.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 3 o'clock at Mr. Browning's residence.
