Camilla died of epileptic seizures while institutionalized at the Indiana Village for Epileptics. Her parents institutionalized her sometime between 1935 and 1940. The village was understaffed and the care had grown sub-par and outdated by the 1940s. Men and women lived on separate campuses, so as to not marry and pass on the "epileptic gene" to any potential children. The commune was self sufficient in many ways, as the patients were expected to farm the land, raise animals, etc. Records show that at the time of Camilla's passing there was an extremely high ratio of patients to nurses. This resulted in lack of care and concern from the nursing staff, and issues that should not have been fatal, were.
