Ballard Melvin,49, known to has many friends in the city as "Chigger", died in a local hospital Monday afternoon after an illness of four days. A life long resident of Paintsville he was born August 16,1908, the son of Mrs. Ida Melvin Salyer of this city and the late John Melvin. He was a member of the Southside Freewill Baptist Church and was a painter by trade. Surviving are his widow, Ethel Trusty Melvin; two sons, Edward Ray and Gary Eugene Melvin, both of this city; two sisters, Mrs. Addie Price, city; Mrs. Edgar Willis Van Hoose, Louisa; six brothers, Willie, Roy, Ralph, George, James and Clarence Melvin, all of this city. Funeral services were conducted Thursday at 1:30 p.m., from the Southside Freewill Baptist Church with Rev. Walter Hooper as officiating minister. Music will be by the Toms Creek Singers.
