A son of Levi Bell (1812-1893) and his second wife Mary Jane Van Pelt (1831-1905), James never married. A family record says he was a salesman for the Lynchburg, Virginia Shoe Company (note per Senator Sam J. Ervin). He lived in Greenville, SC with his widowed sister, Mary Rhetta Bell (1862-1947, Mrs. Ernest Marion Field), and contributed to the educations of her children. Uncle Jim Bell was often spoken of highly in the Field family. While his tombstone gives his date of death as 31 March, his death certificate states he died at 10:50 pm, 30 March 1929, at his home at 417 Pendleton Street, Greenville, South Carolina. He passed from this life five days past his 62nd birthday.
