Herman Smith, 79, of Big Spring, died on Monday, May 15, 2006, at his residence.

Graveside funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM Friday, May 19, 2006 at Trinity Memorial Park with Rev. Ken McIntosh, minister of First Christian Church officiating.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM Thursday at the funeral home.

He was born on August 12, 1926, in Birdville, Texas and married Jane Woodruff on December 29, 1950 in Odessa, Texas. She preceded him in death on December 6, 1995.

Mr. Smith had been a resident of Big Spring since 1962.

He was an educator for thirty-seven years working as a teacher and coach for Big Spring ISD from 1962-1967 and an elementary principal from 1967-1989. Coaching and teaching was his life and he influenced countless generations with his inspiration and love of sports and learning.

Herman was an avid outdoorsman enjoying fishing, hunting and making his own fishing flies.

He was also a master cabinet maker and enjoyed reading.

He was an elder of First Christian Church and a member of the Kiwanis Club where he had served as president.

Survivors include one daughter, Susan Smith of Fairfax, Virginia; one son, M.D. Smith of San Miguel de Allende, Mexico; two grandchildren, Erin Smith of Fairfax, Virginia, and Eden Smith of Roanoke, Virginia; three sisters, Ruby Inman of Bon Wier, Peggy Price of Burleson, and Sarah Ruth Fuller of Arlington.

He was also preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and one sister.

The family suggests memorials be made to a charity of choice.
