While his wife hurried about to secure a postponement of the sale of some of his property on a mortgage foreclosure which had been a source of annoyance to him of late, Francis B. Gill, a prominent lawyer with offices in the University Block, yesterday morning at 10:30 o'clock committed suicide by cutting his throat with a razor in the bathroom of his home at No. 509 McBride street. Coroner Daniel F. Mathews, who investigated the case later in the day, decided that Mr. Gill caused death by his own hand, but ascribed no motives for the net (?).

[several paragraphs omitted]

Mr. Gill was born at Antwerp, Jefferson County, in November 1852, and spent his early life on a farm. After a common school education he taught school for several terms to secure the means of a college education. He entered Cornell University, from which he graduated in 1882 and commenced law study in this city with the firm of Costello & Ide. After admission to the bar he became the partner of Giles H. Stilwell, with whom he was associated in business until last year when Mr. Stilwell withdrew and Mr. Gill continued the law practice.
Mr. Gill was well known in the city for his progressive and industrious ways and the interest which he took in political and reform movements of the city. He was a prominent member of the Citizens Club and the president of the North Side Citizens Association. The latter will meet this evening to adopt resolutions on his death.
The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at 4 o'clock from the residence of Mrs. Robert Townsend at No. 312 James Street.
