Bio

I descend from James Rowe Sr. (b. 1753 Culpeper Co., VA & d. 1830 Pike Co., KY https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/185441107/james-rowe ) through his son James Rowe JR and his wife Sophie Rowe nee Huffman. We too have been brickwalled at James for ages, like every other branch of the family I have run across so far. In the last few years we have begun using DNA to try to break through that brick wall. We've recently done some Y-dna testing at Family Tree DNA. We have 4 matches there, including myself. Two are on the Stephen and Barbara Huffman Rowe branch. Another on the Joseph Duncan "Joel" and Elizabeth Plymale Rowe branch. We 4 descend from 3 of James Rowe Sr 6 sons, leaving the other 3 branches still unaccounted for. The genetic distance predicted by the Y-dna tests submitted by myself and the other two branches seem to match up with the time distance to our genealogical MRCA, James Rowe SR. The genes and genealogy support one other. This pretty much proves that this is the Y-DNA of James Joseph Rowe SR.

I'm not sure about your Rowes, but we were always told we were English. Y-dna testing has so far put us at haplotype CTS4466 A1135 A195. This Y haplotype is associated mostly with the old Irish Kingdom of Munster. So, ultimately, we seem to be from southern Ireland, although a pitstop in England before landing on the American shore is not out of the question. I'm working on future dna testing to help further clarify it. But as of right now we have a 900 year gap between our distant relatives in Ireland and our landing in America sometime before 1753 with James Rowe Srs birth.

We welcome other interested Rowe/Roe men (or if you are a woman, you need a brother, father or male line Rowe cousin to test) to join us in this Y-DNA quest at Family Tree DNA. We are hoping to find someone descended from a brother, father, cousin, etc. of James SR. A way to break through the paper trail dead end we have so long encountered with determining his origins. Or, since we seem to have established James Rowe Srs Y-dna haplotype, you could use it as a way to confirm a connection and possible descent from him. If you decide to take the Y test, please do one at Y-67 or higher and please look for sales they have multiple times a year. As a bonus, if you have autosomal tested with either 23&ME or Ancestry in the last 2 years you can upload your results for free to FTDNA and compare your results against their autosomal database. Although many of us will be distant enough from each other that autosomal dna comparisons might read only as statistical noise. You can see an extensive (not exhaustive, we are a large family and it is a work in progress) family tree I have constructed here (follow link below), although you may need an account to view it. Come join me and together lets figure this out! http://www.familytreedna.com/my/family-tree/share?k=j4SyRRq1a75a%2F2e3GhQDbQ%3D%3D
