Bio

My name is Don Wallace (born 1952), I live in Boulder, Colorado. I am a descendant of the Wallace's which were early settlers of southern New Jersey along both the north and south banks of Pennsauken Creek, a tributary of the Delaware River. The area north of Pennsauken Creek (Burlington County) would eventually became known as Palmyra, NJ where many of the Wallace's lived and are buried.

My great-great-great grandfather is Thomas Wallace (1774-1832) who married Ann Shivers (1773-1853) and they had 10 children together. Their 2nd oldest child, Thomas Wallace (1797-1839), is my great-great-grandfather. He married Sarah Hinkle and they had at 3 children together: William (1830-1918), Thomas (1826-1914) and Lemuel (1837-1898). All three sons worked together as shoemakers in the Palmyra, NJ and Philadelphia, PA areas in the mid-1800s.

Lemuel Wallace is my great-grandfather. He married Jane Brower Crane (1842-1911) in 1858 and they had 6 children together that lived to adulthood. Their youngest son Frank Thomas Wallace (1871-1955) is my grandfather. After Lemuel received his doctor of medicine degree from Eclectic Medical College of Pennsylvania in 1872, he moved his family to Alloway, NJ in 1873 where he practiced medicine until his death in 1898. They owned a home at 25 N. Greenwich Street (NW corner of Canal and Greenwich streets) in Alloway during their stay in Alloway for the next 35 years.

Alice Rose Yoerger (1881-1981) is my paternal grandmother. She is the oldest child of Joseph and Ida (née Sterki) Yoerger who immigrated from France/Switzerland in 1882. The Yoerger family lived at 8 String Street, 5 houses from the Wallace family, where Frank and Alice eventually met and married in 1900. After their marriage, they moved to West Chester, PA where they lived for the next 50 years and where my father Joseph Lemuel Wallace (1917-1997) was born. My father graduated from West Chester High School in 1937.

After Dr. Lemuel Wallace died in 1898, his wife Jane remained in Alloway until she passed in 1911. Only one of their 6 children (Florence) remained in Alloway after completing their schooling. Florence and her husband Albert Craft took ownership of the Wallace Family home until they passed in 1950. No Wallace descendants remain in Alloway. The other Wallace siblings moved to Philadelphia or nearby suburbs such as Glenolden and West Chester. Currently, many of the descendants of Dr. Wallace reside in the Philadelphia and south NJ areas.

4 of the 6 Joseph Yoerger children remained in Alloway for their entire lives. Sister Anna married Harry Musser and they moved to Anaheim, CA in 1919 where they remained the rest of their lives. There is only one Yoerger who remains in Alloway today - my father's first cousin Joseph R. Yoerger III (born 1932). His mother was Alma Timberman, daughter of Reeves Timberman. There a few Yoerger descendants who currently live on the west coast although we have lost contact with them in the past 10 years.

I am related to the Crane family, the founders of Montclair, NJ. The Cranes were quite predominate in the NYC, Elizabeth, Newark and Montclair, NJ areas. Lemuel Wallace married Jane Brower Crane who is the daughter of Alfred Crane (1810-1849) and Mary Ann Brower Tompkins (1820-1909) who originally lived in the NY/Newark, NJ area before moving to southern NJ in the 1840s. Mary Ann and her son John Crane moved to Wilkes-Barre, PA in the mid-1860s where they lived for the next 40+ years until their deaths.

I'm looking for relatives who are interested in exploring our family history. Feel free to reach out to me if you are possibly related.
