Anthropologist. He was a famous Native American anthropologist from San Juan (Ohkay Owingeh) Pueblo in New Mexico. His most illustrious book was The Tewa World, a detailed description of an intricate world in which the universe surrounding each pueblo is demarcated by four sacred mountains, each associated with a direction, a color, an animal, a mineral and a star. He is known for bridging the gap between traditional native knowledge and the science of anthropology. He actively encouraged Native Americans and other minorities to pursue careers in anthropology. The Alfonso Ortiz Center for Intercultural Studies at the University of New Mexico is named for him.
