Major League Baseball Player. He pitched for Major League Baseball's Cincinnati Reds, New York Mets, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Philadelphia Phillies from 1976 to 1985. He was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in the 19th Round of the 1970 Major League Baseball draft after playing baseball in high school. He spent six seasons in the Reds' farm system before being called up to the main team in 1976. His pitching during 1976 earned him Rookie of the Year honors that year and he also helped the team win that year's World Series. In 1977, he was traded to the New York Mets in exchange for Mets' star pitcher Tom Seaver. He went on to pitch for the Mets for five and half years before being traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers during the 1982-1983 offseason. While with the Mets, he was named to the 1978 All-Star Game. He pitched for the Dodgers for two years before moving on to the Philadelphia Phillies for his last season in 1985. He played for the Phillies for one year before retiring after the 1985 season. His career statistics included a win-loss record of 69-67, an ERA of 3.52 and 669 strikeouts. After retiring, he went into coaching. He passed away after a lengthy illness.
