Add PhotosUntil the year 1841, there was only one German Catholic congregation in Philadelphia, that of Holy Trinity, at Sixth and Spruce Streets. At that time, the number of German-speaking Catholics who settled "uptown" in the Northern Liberties and beyond was considerable, and they appealed to Bishop F. P. Kendrick for permission to erect a new church. The Bishop readily assented. An appeal was made to the Redemptorist Order in the United States for a German-speaking priest to oversee the congregation and supply funds to construct the edifice, and they consented as well. In 1842, a lot on the corner of Fifth and Girard was purchased. On August 15th, 1843, a cornerstone was laid and the church was dedicated in 1845.
As early as 1843, the small churchyard burial ground began to fill up. In 1849, one and a half acres on Almond, Richmond, and Tioga Streets in Port Richmond was purchased for $126.00 for a new parish cemetery. The first burial occurred there in August, 1849.
Those interred in the churchyard were removed to the new parish cemetery in Port Richmond in 1860 in order to make room for a new parochial school building.
