Below from FAG contributor Mae Gentry, great granddaughter;
My great-grandfather, "Captain" Edwin Gaillard Harleston, owned and operated the Harleston Funeral Establishment at 121 Calhoun Street in Charleston, SC, from 1901 until his death in 1931. The funeral home remained in the family for many years but eventually was sold and became Harleston-Boags. (Note spelling of Boags -- not Boggs.) However, I don't believe Mr. Boags actually owned the cemetery.
I have documents (a funeral home brochure and my great-grandfather's estate inventory) that show he owned Elmwood Cemetery. The brochure (written in 1929) states, "ELMWOOD CEMETERY -- In order to increase our facilities for complete and perfect funeral service to our public, this firm has for fourteen years owned and operated Elmwood Cemetery, where grave plots may be purchased at a reasonable rate."
My great-grandfather's estate was probated in 1932, and the court ordered that all of his property be sold. As you know, this was during the Great Depression and the estate was not completely settled until 1942. The only property that remained in the family was 121 Calhoun Street, which was sold to Mr. Boags in the 1970s.
