In 1890 St. Adalbert's Parish, located on Stanislaus Street in Buffalo, purchased 10 acres of land on Walden Avenue near Harlem Road for burial purposes. Prior to this, members of the parish, which was founded in 1886, were buried at United German and French Cemetery on Pine Ridge Road. The first burial in the cemetery was on May 12, 1890. Early records indicate that adult burials cost $5.00 and children under the age of 12 cost $4.00. In the case of the poor, in which the city paid the cost, adult burials were $2.00 and children were $1.50. As the number of burials increased additional land was purchased to the west of the original cemetery and the first burial in the newer cemetery occurred on Nov. 23, 1933. When Walden Avenue was re-routed to the north the old portion of Walden Avenue that the cemeteries are located on was renamed Dale Road. Holy Mother of the Rosary Polish National Cemetery separates St. Adalbert's old and new cemeteries on Dale Road.
In 1956 the New York Central Railroad right-of-way was expanded and approximately one acre of St. Adalbert's Cemetery was condemned. Several hundred bodies had to be moved from these sections to the south end of the newer cemetery. These included adults from June 1914 through January 1915 and children from 1907-1912, as well as some adults and children from later years.
With increased burials and the loss of land due to the railroad expansion, St. Adalbert's Parish purchased additional property on Broadway in the Town of Lancaster. The first burial in the Lancaster cemetery took place on Dec. 29, 1971.
The daily record book for the cemetery does not record grave locations for burials between January 1904 and June 1928. Grave locations for earlier and later years were usually recorded.
