So clearly it was earliest known as a Williams Cemetery, but there are more than two dozen cemeteries in Indiana known by that name. So here is it called Simon Williams Cemetery to better differentiate it from the other Williams Cemeteries in the vicinity, and to honor the memory of our family patriarch.
This was the family cemetery of Simon Williams, who settled on the property in 1814, two years prior to statehood. Not long before his death, the original 160 acre farm was split in thirds, with the northwestern third that contains the cemetery being deeded to his son, Enoch Williams (whose headstone is still extant there) on 2 Jul 1834. The other two thirds of the property was deeded in two separate transactions to another son of Simon Williams: John Williams (husband of Elizabeth Rook). The graves of Simon's children Jemima, Lewis, Enoch and George are still extant (in 2013) at this cemetery, though Lewis' stone is nearly illegible.
The first known interment at this cemetery was the infant Mary C Cater in 1817. The last known interment was Avery Allen in 1896, who at 93 years of age was also the oldest person interred there. The earliest male ancester to be interred here was Simon Williams (b. about 1753, d. about 1824), and the earliest female was Eleanor, wife of James Cater (b. about 1757, d. about 1835).
There are only two stones that date prior to 1832, both infants. There are only three stones that date later than 1871, those of Lydia Knowles (1882), Caroline Vickers (1888) and Avery Allen (1896). Thus, the main period of activity at the cemetery spanned a period of 40 years.
To get to the cemetery, head west from Cynthiana on Hwy 68 for about one half mile. The cemetery is on a knoll on the west side of the road, approximately 600 feet to the west and about the same distance south of Rodgers Road. There is no sign for the cemetery, and it is located on private property, on a working farm. The property is mowed twice per year and is generally not visible from the road during the growing season.
Records for graves without headstone photos are derived from:
Cemetery Records of Southern Indiana by Robert E. Turman (1946, edited and expanded by Madge Yeager Olson 1977).
Posey County Cemetery Records, 1814-1979 by Carroll O. Cox (1979) - NOTE: Not all of the entries made by Mr. Cox were based upon headstones that we extant at the time that he published - SOME ARE BASED UPON UNCITED SOURCES.
Interpretation of headstone fragments and footstones is based upon the above sources.
The cemetery is located in Smith Township (SW quadrant of the NW quadrant of the NW quadrant of Section 14 Township 4S Range 12W).
Indiana Cemetery Locations, Volume 4, published by the Indiana Genealogical Society (April 2009), gives the primary cemetery name as Williams Cemetery.
The cemetery is listed in the Cemetery and Burial Grounds Registry of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and in the State Historical Architectural and Archaeological Research Database (SHAARD) with Cemetery Record Number CR-65-110 (William's / Cater / Simon Williams).
The Indiana Historic Sites and Structures Inventory (IHSSI) survey number for Williams Cemetery is 129-146-00004 with the dataset compiled in 2002.
