Add PhotosLocated: On a high hill on the west side of Carpenter Street, Utica, Southwest Hinds County, MS, not far from and behind the home at ___ Carpenter Street, currently owned by the Neill Family, in S17T3NR4W and behind Mrs Breedens. It is at least 150 yards behind Mrs. Breeden's old house and more than that from Pat Neill's house, beyond their garden and pasture, and out in the edge of the woods behind an old abandoned barn. Nobody would ever know it was there unless they were told about it.
Recorded: By Mary Collins Landin, on 9 August 1992
First Grave: 1863
Remarks: The cemetery was vandalized about 30 years ago so badly by neighborhood boys playing on the hill that there are no unbroken stones. There are more people buried here than this list reflects, all members of the Broome and extended families. Matthew Broome first came to Cane Ridge (Utica) in the 1820s, and had two wives. They had 15 children who survived to adulthood, and many Utica area people are descendants of this family. Broome had 7 sons who were soldiers in the CSA during the Civil War, some of whom were killed and three of whom moved to Texas immediately following the War.
I recorded the cemetery in 1992 and re-recorded the cemetery 2013 while Justin McGuffee was cleaning it up and repairing stones as his Eagle Scout project. UHS was his official sponsor. I have it in my computer and it is in the vertical file on Hinds County at the Archives. Here's what I found at the time. It is not in my 1988 book because I could not locate it. It had been all but totally wiped out by a couple of pre-teens who I knew but who are now both dead from car wrecks so I will not name. Dorothy Coleman Brewer was trying to piece the stones back together in all the weeds and briars in 1992 and I joined in her effort. There are at least 8 cemeteries in Hinds and Claiborne Counties with Broomes buried in them, probably more. Mary Collins Landin
