Add PhotosThe Upper Burying Ground on the West Side of the Schuylkill adjoined the Lower Burying Ground, located on the road from the upper and middle ferries across the Schuylkill River. It had been conjectured that it was originally the burying ground of the Friends' Meeting at the Center Square in Philadelphia at the time of the earliest colonization of Pennsylvania. It was thought it had been abandoned after only a few years, after which it unofficially began being used by poor persons as a place for free interment.
In 1811, the State Senate passed an act to vest the burial ground to the Guardians of the Poor as a place of interment, and in 1813, the commonwealth itself took ownership of the two acres and 22 perches of land comprising the burial ground.
Like the Lower Burying Ground, this burial ground was likely totally obliterated by the construction of the Pennsylvania Railroad.
