Elmer would be so proud to know that his youngest child will turn 96 this year, and that 4 of 5 grandchildren still mark time: 3 in their early 70s. Sadly, his granddaughter Claudia Louise Merriss Love, passed away in 2018 at age 67, and the youngest in the early 60s age group. Also, he would be most proud to know that 10 great-grandchildren have grown and become wonderful adults, and their children are flourishing and will make terrific adults.

Joseph Sheffield Merriss born 1820 in Chagrin Twp., Cuyahoga County Ohio, and Sarah Walkup of Pennsylvania. And maternal grandparents Grace Abner and Luther Paschal.
Native American Background:
His mother, grandmother (Grace Abner) and great-grandmother (Sarah Tocus) were adopted into the Peoria Indian Tribe of Oklahoma June 1864, while his mother was a small child.
At age 3, Elmer was awarded a land Allotment for 200 acres of Indian Lands by the U.S. Government. His true Indian blood was that of the Pequot Indian.

Elmer was elected and served in the capacity of City Commissioner Ward 1 for several years. Was up for re-election in 1933.
And one of his most notable roles was Superintendent of the Sunday School at the local Friends Church for many years.
While married to Lula, he owned several lots of land in and around Miami, on which he planted and grew many varieties of vegetables which were served on their dinner tables. Some of his agricultural knowledge was passed on to his boys, who frequently accompanied him to each of the gardens. They especially loved eating vegetables fresh from the vine.
Elmer and his family were highly respected and very well liked by all who new them.
He left his loved ones unexpectedly during a short illness.

Elmer Merriss, 57, lifelong Miami resident died early this morning at Miami Baptist hospital following a throat infection. Merriss had been employed as a bookkeeper at the Beck Mining and Royalty Company for 30 years. He was the son of the late W. W. Merriss, first U. S, marshal assigned to Indian Territory. Surviving are two sons, Paul Merriss, U. S. N., Fugate, Ida., and Charles Merriss, Montebello, Calif.; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Forrest Young, Pieher; a stepson, Glenn Brown, Oakland, Calif.; a brother, John Merriss, and a sister, Mrs. H. C. Rocker, both of Lindsay, Calif. Funeral arrangements are to be announced by the Lane Funeral Home.

Curtis wIll officiate at the services, to be held, at the Presbyterian Church. Fellow employees, of the Beck Mining and Royalty Company will serve as pallbearers. The body of Mr. Merriss will lie in state, at the Lane Chapel until the hour of the service. Burial will be in G.A.R. Cemetery, under the direction of the Lane Funeral home.
