Family Background:
Daughter of Luther and Grace (Abner) Paschal; granddaughter of Randall and Sarah (Tocus) Abner.
Justina's grandparents, Randall and Sarah Abner were Pequot Indians who joined with the Brothertown Christian Indians in New York. They migrated with the tribe to Wisconsin in 1832 where Grace (Justina's mother) was born in 1833. The Abners farmed land in Wisconsin and remained there for almost 20 years. The family then moved to Paola, Kansas where Grace was married to Luther Paschall, a Kaskaskia Indian, and Justina was born. Sarah, Grace, and Justina along with other family members, were adopted by the Peoria Indian Tribe in 1864; and later moved with the Peoria tribe to Oklahoma.

The condition of Mrs. William W. Merriss, 116 F street northeast has been ill at her home for eight months, is reported critical. Mrs. Merriss is the mother of Elmer Merriss of the Beck Royalty company.

Funeral services for Mrs. Justina Merriss, wife of William Merriss, who died Friday afternoon, were conducted Sunday afternoon Friends Christian church. Burial was in G. A. R. cemetery. Mrs. Merriss was Miss Justina Paschal before her marriage. She was born at Paola, Kas., July 13, 1858, and moved to Indian territory when 3 years old, the family settling in what is now Ottawa county. On July 11, 1875, she was married to Mr. Merriss, the ceremony being performed by the Rev. Thomas F. Richardville. ???? years later Mr. and Mrs. Merriss journeyed to Texas in a covered wagon, returning the same year. In later years, with her husband, she made several trips to California to visit relatives, having returned from the last trip about a year ago. Mrs. Merriss was a long time member of the Friends church of Miami, taking an active part in missionary work. Besides her husband, she is survived by three sons, John E. Merriss of Lindsay, Cal., Elmer E. Merriss of Miami and Clinton W. Merriss of Muskogee; two daughters, Mrs. Sarah E. Rocker of Lindsay and Mrs. Grace Williams of Miami; a half brother William W. Blakeslee of Salem, Ore., and 27 grandchildren.
