Once descibed as one of the giants in traditional mountain music, Art Stamper who was born in Hindman, KY died of throat cancer Sunday evening. He was 71. In 2004 he recieved the Distinguished Achievement Award from the International Bluegrass Music Association. He performed with many bands including Bill Monroe's Bluegrass Boys, The Osborne Brothers, and the Goins Brothers. He comes from an area of Kentucky rich with bluegrass music history, and where mountain music was actually born years ago. He was an accomplished fiddle player who retired from his music career in 1956 to raise his son, who is now carrying on the family tradition. He returned to music in 1978, and played with many bands. He is survived by his wife Kay, daughter Jennifer, sons Blake and Blane. He will be missed.
