Bess McGowan was the daughter of Terrance McGowan and his wife Katie McGloin of County Leitrim Ireland. She immigrated with her parents and siblings about 1890; living first in Brooklyn and then moving up the Hudson River to Newburgh, NY.
In 1909 she married William P. Haviland in Newburgh and had three children; William, Terrance and Marion.
The young family enjoyed boating on the Hudson and frequently camped out at the mouth of the Esopus River north of Newburgh on the shores of the Hudson River.
When her husband became ill she went to work as a cook in a children's home in Newburgh.
After his death in 1936 she remarried Sidney Herbert and continued to live in the Orange County area until her death in 1961.
