Walnut Creek Man Killed In North Africa, Parents Notified
Holmes county's first war casualty was announced Monday when Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Hamsher, who live about a half mile north of Walnut Creek were notified that their son Pvt. Rollin Hamsher, was killed in action in the North Africa area on Aug. 12. Pvt. Hamsher, a former basketball star on the Walnut Creek team, was about 22 years of age, and has been [in] service since December, 1942. He attended radio school at Camp Wheeler and was awarded a marksmanship while there. After three weeks training at Greenville, Pa., he was sent to New Jersey and from there reported for foreign service. He never had a furlough. More recently he had been awarded the North African campaign service ribbon for participation in the battle which drove the Axis out of Tunisia. Prior to entering the army, Pvt. Hamsher was employed by the Hercules Motors Co., in Canton. His wife, the former Edith Richards of Killbuck, and his parents survive.

Hamsher, son of Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Hamsher of Rt. 2, Sugarcreek, who was killed in action in Sicily, will be held at the Walnut Creek Mennonite church Sunday afternoon, Sept. 19th, at 2:30. The services will be in charge of Rev. Paul R. Miller. Pvt. Hamsher, who was 21, was inducted into the army Dec. 4, 1942, and had been overseat[sic] for three and a half months. - September 16, 1943
