Marie Petsock Hemlick
PHILADELPHIA — Marie (Petsock) Hemlick, 92, passed away July 15, 2013, at her home in Philadelphia.
Born in Shamokin, she was a daughter of the late John Petsock and Eugenia "Jenny" (Homiak) Petsock.
She graduated from Shamokin High School in 1938.
Marie was the devoted wife of the late Adam Hemlick, who preceded her in death. They celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary in September 2011.
After graduating from high school, she worked briefly in New York City. She then completed training to become a registered nurse at the St. Vincent Hospital School of Nursing in New York. After working at several hospitals there, she entered the U.S. Navy Nurse Corps during World War II and served at the rank of Lieutenant JG. She cared for sailors and military dependents at several sites, including St. Albans Naval Hospital and the Banana River and Key West Naval Air Stations. She had many noteworthy experiences, including accompanying a premature newborn on an emergency flight in a "puddle jumper" to Jacksonville during a hurricane.
After the war, Marie earned her Bachelor of Science in nursing education from the University of Pennsylvania and then worked at several hospitals in Philadelphia.
She was married in 1949 at the Transfiguration Ukrainian Catholic Church in Shamokin and considered it to be her lifelong church home. Focusing the rest of her life on raising her children and caring for her family, she was a devoted wife and mother and the proud "Granny" of Natalie and Gabrielle. She greatly enjoyed listening to them play their musical instruments. She also loved books and poetry, followed current events and loved a good cup of tea.
Marie is survived by a daughter, Lisa; two sons, John, of Philadelphia, and Mark and wife, Kathryn (Kochanowski) Hemlick; and two granddaughters, Natalie and Gabrielle, of Lancaster; two sisters, Elizabeth (Petsock) Hesse and Phyllis (Petsock) Boyle, both of Napa, Calif.; four nieces, Mary Ann (Boyle) Vangrin, Aimee (Boyle) Dunn, Jenifer (Boyle) Duffy and Nora (Boyle) Leaf, all of California, and several cousins of the Pacocha family of Shamokin. Marie was also an aunt to Edward Korbich Jr., Sandra Kalfas and Michelle McKenzie.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
