Friday, September 23, 1921, page 5
Miss Gertrude VanStavern, of Pickaway, Monroe county, entered into rest at Mt Rigis Sanitarium near Salem , Virginia, Tuesday, September 13th, 1921. She was afflicted with tuberculosis and some months ago went to Mt Regis hoping for relief. Although she was not recovering, her passing came unexpectedly. Her attached friends asked life for her, and God gave her a long life, "even forever and ever." Miss VanStaver was a trained nurse of marked efficiency. She was a daughter of the late Benjamin VanStavern of Second Creek, the oldest child by his second marriage, her mother having been Miss Mary Daugherty. Both her parents died years ago. Her age was about 32 years. She beautifully mothered her younger sisters, was a lovely Christian character and loyal friend. Miss VanStavern is survived by three sisters - Misses Virginia and Bertha, of Pickaway, and Miss Cora VanStavern, who is teaching in Williamson; one half-brother, J C VanStavern, of Hillsdale, and one half-sister, Mrs Carrie Burdette, of Ronceverte. Her body was brought back to her native county and on Wednesday afternoon was laid to repose at Salem Church near Organ Cave, funeral services first being conducted in that sanctuary by Rev R L Kinnaird, assisted by Rev J H Bean, of Hinton, Rev Robt B Hudson and Rev T B Stewart. A very large congregation was present. The floral tributes were of surpassing beauty and profusion.
