Wife of
Richard F. Gorman

Mary Ellen Davis was born in Aberavon, Glamorgan, Wales, to James and Rebecca Lewis Davis. They moved to the USA when Mary was just a girl. At the time of her death she was survived by her sisters Elizabeth Holmes, Mae Davis and brother Isaac Davis. Upon arrival in the USA the family settled in Ohio. On November 20, 1919 Mary married Richard F. Gorman of Providence, Rhode Island.
Mary and Richie would be married just short of 50 years, when she lost her Richie on September 9, 1969. Mary and Richie lived in many states in the USA, from Rhode Island, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Arizona. In their later years health issues had them move to Arizona and they enjoyed it there but as they got older and things became hard for them, they moved back to Pennsylvania to live with Mary’s family.
In 1969, Richie’s youngest sister, who he remained close to all his life passed away. She died in February during a blizzard and Richie was unable to come for the funeral. He wanted so much to be able to pay his respects. His sister, Jessie’s daughter his niece Virginia had promised she would bring him back to NJ for a visit that year and she die. She had wanted Mary to come along as Richie was not happy living with his in-laws. When his niece got out to Pennsylvania to bring Richie to NJ to visit, Richie complained that he felt his wife’s family was trying to get rid of him, by withholding medication and oxygen, which he needed to survive. He asked his niece if he and Mary could come live with her in New Jersey. Mary and Richie never had children, and they had saved their money, he wasn’t rich, but they had a little nest egg for their old age. Mary’s family became quite upset and refused to allow her to leave. Richie decided he was going and told her he would return. When Richie got to New Jersey, he became ill and asked to be buried near his beloved sister. On September 9th, 1969 he passed away. He was laid to rest in a grave very close to his sister and had told him niece to hold on to some money and when Mary died, he would like her remains to be sent to New Jersey for burial. His niece placed the call to notify Mary that Richie had passed away, and told her he left her money to be buried in New Jersey with him. The money went to Mary and her family, but no other word was sent to let Richie’s family know if Mary had ever passed away. His niece and brother-in-law wanted so much for the couple to be together, but when Mary died she was buried without Richie’s family ever knowing what happened. His grandniece, me searched for many years to find Mary’s grave and now one day hopes that she can be the one to bring Mary and Richie together again. I am sure though, they have been since Mary joined him almost 4 years to the day of Richie’s death.

They were a sweet loving couple, Mary very tiny and petite, Richie very tall. May they both rest in peace if not together in one cemetery, then together on Find A Grave…and in heaven.
