Gabriel W Grimes enlisted July 11, 1861 Company A 16th Georgia Infantry. Company A known as the "Madison Greys" was organized in Madison County, GA.

Appointed 4th Sergeant September 14,1862.

Captured at Cold Harbor (near Richmond, VA) June 1, 1864 and sent to Point Lookout Maryland. Tranferred to Elmira, NY.

Took the 'Oath of Allegiance' at Elmira May 19, 1865. Residence Athens, GA; Complexion Florid; Hair light, Eyes Grey, height 6 ft 0 in.

Stated on the Oath of Allegiance:
"Remarks: Volunteered July 10, 1861 was over persuaded to do so by misrepresentation and desires to go to Ohio where he has friends residing."
