Opal was the daughter of John Archer Barron and Martha Clara Lillie Denton Barron. She was the wife of Bill Newt Smith. Opal had been a Avon representative for 36 years, and she was a member of Marrable Hill Baptist Church.

Opal was predeceased by her husband Bill Newt Smith and sons Herbert Lance Smith and Billy Gene Smith. She is survived by son Ronald Smith of Fortney, Texas; daughter Marty Gassaway of Cabot, six grandchildren and four great grandchildren. On 7 June 2003, funeral services were held at Bailey Funeral Home in El Dorado, Union County, Arkansas with interment at Canaan Cemetery.

Three of Opal's ancestors are documented Daughters of the American Revolution soldiers and patriots. These ancestors are William Barron, John Barron and John Garrard.
