She lived first in Pennsylvania where she married Christian Peterson, an immigrant from Denmark, on October 20, 1866 at All Saints Episcopal Church in Philadelphia.
Christian and Elizabeth eventually moved to Wilmington, Delaware.
Christian died on October 31, 1885 in Wilmington. Elizabeth was living with her daughter Bessie and her family at the time of her death on April 25, 1921. Her death certificate states that she is buried in Wilmington and Brandywine Cemetery.
