Ernst Heinkel began his engineering career as a designer with the Johannisthal aviation company and later worked for the Albatros Works, the Hansa- and Brandenburg Aircraft Works and the Caspar Works. In 1922 he founded his own company, the Ernst Heinkel Aircraft Works in Warnemunde, which employed over 50,000 workers during the Second World War in its plants in Rostock, Oranienburg, Waltersdorf, Vienna-Jenbach (in Austria) and in the "United East-Works" in Mielec and Cracow. In the aftermath of the war, Heinkel, like other German companies, was at first forbidden to manufacture aircraft. Instead, his company produced small aircraft engines and the legendary Heinkel motorbikes and scooters, including the Heinkel "Pearl". Only with the opening of the "Ernst Heinkel Aircraft Construction Ltd." in Speyer in 1955 did Heinkel once again begin building airplanes.
