When 120 Squadron’s Liberator I AM925 'X' aircraft took flight from RAF Nutts Corner in Northern Ireland to begin an anti-submarine sortie, it was not able to gain height and, as a result, the Liberator struck a radio mast near the east west runway; severely damaged, when it finally came to rest the aircraft caught fire and exploded. Four of the nine aircrew members perished as a result of the accident, and the other five airmen were injured. One of the wireless operator/air gunners, Sergeant John Felix Waite, rescued Navigator P/O Densham from the burning Liberator; for that courageous action, he was awarded the George Medal.
