It is not known whether Sonia was a native of Arapkir, Turkey like her husband, Hagop Der Avedisian, or if she was from the Erzincan region where they were known to be living in 1900. They had four children, two of those Arshag and Siranoush died in the Armenian Genocide of 1915. Another son Haroutune survived and escaped across the frontier with Russia, first settling in Ganja, Azerbaijan, and later to Nor Arabkir (New Arapkir) in Yerevan, Armenia. Their youngest son Kerope also survived by joining resistence to the Turks and was an officer who fought in the Defense of Hadjin and later moved to the United States. It is believed Hagop and Sonia died in the Armenian Genocide of 1915. Kerope named his youngest daughter after her.
