Wilhelm F. Krueger was born in Bergwitz-Wittenberg, Saxony, Germany as first of six children of Gottlieb Krueger & Johanne Renate.

Wittenberg is the name of a district within the State of Saxony-Anhalt in the country today known as Germany. The city of Wittenberg is now known as Lutherstadt Wittenberg, originally a small Flemish (from northern Belgium) colony in 1180. The city is located on the Elbe River and is famous for its close connection to Martin Luther and the dawn of the Protestant Reformation in 1517. In 1760 the Prussian occupied town was attacked by Austrians.

In 1877 Wilhelm married Marie Blanke of Schmiedeberg, Saxony . Two sons were born before the journey to America. The youngest died before arrival on 28 April 1881 in New Orleans on the SS Frankfurt. Six more children were born in Texas.

The couple settled in the Richland Community in Travis County. Later they purchased a farm on County Line Road between Bastrop and Travis County three miles east of Elgin.
