Musician. He was the keyboardist for one of Motown's most successful groups, The Commodores. Formed in Tuskegee, Alabama in 1970, the group included Lionel Richie as lead vocals and on saxophone. During the 1970s they had a string of hits which included "Sweet Love" (1976), "Just To Be Close To You" (1976), "Easy" (1977), "Brick House" (1977) and "Three Times A Lady" (1978). Williams wrote their first hit song, "Machine Gun" (1972). They continued to record after Richie's departure in 1982 with the successful hit "Nightshift" (1985), a tribute to singers Marvin Gaye and Jackie Wilson.
