Roman Catholic Saint. One of the original twelve disciples of Jesus Christ, James the Less, also called "the Minor", "the Little", "the Lesser" or "the Younger", according to respective Bible translation, used to distinguish him from other people carrying the same name present in the Scriptures, is said to have been the cousin of Jesus and brother of Saint Jude Thaddeus. Becoming the first bishop of Jerusalem, he is said that having spent so much time in prayer that his knees thickened and looked like a camel's. Beaten to death with a club, that almost immediately became his symbol, he is attributed patronage of fullers and pharmacists, both of whom use clubs in their professions, as well as of hatmakers. Buried near Jerusalem's temple in the place in which he was martyred where a small column in his memory was soon erected, his relics were later transported to Constantinople and eventually to Rome where they lie to this day along with those of fellow apostle, Saint Philip, in the Basilica dei Santi Apostoli.
