Louise Ball Wheeler Lilly, 93, of Flatwoods, is now celebrating in the presence of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She left this earthly life on Friday, Aug. 14, 2015, from Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland with loving family by her side.

Louise was born Aug. 29, 1921, in Lawrence County, the daughter of Ada Poe Maddy and Hubert Maddy. She was preceded in death by her former spouses, Frank Ball and Oshel Wheeler; a sister, Lucille McIntyre; and a brother, David Maddy.

Louise was a war bride during World War II and was one of the “Rosie Riveters,” repairing aircraft at Patterson Field in Dayton, Ohio. She worked at many defense-related activities and most notably worked at Owens Illinois Glass Company in Huntington, W.Va. She later worked in the pediatrics department at King’s Daughter’s Hospital in Ashland, where she retired in 1981, and married the Rev. George W. Lilly of Winfield, W.Va. Prior to marrying George, she had been a faithful member of Twin Fork Church of the Nazarene in Catlettsburg for several years. She then became a member of the Teays Valley Church of the Nazarene in Teays Valley, W.Va., joining her husband. They became charter members of The Winfield Church of the Nazarene in Winfield, W.Va., and were instrumental in helping to build this new church which still thrives today. Following George’s death in 2002, she returned to Kentucky to be closer to family, making her home in Flatwoods at Trinity Station Retirement Community where she lived happily and independently in a new cottage for 12 years. She lived by the commandment “Love Thy Neighbor,” cherishing each one. She was proud to receive the honor of being named a Kentucky colonel. Louise was deeply loved and delighted in celebrating her 90th birthday surprise party with more than 75 friends and family in attendance at Ashland Plaza Church of the Nazarene, where she had regularly attended. Recently, she had been attending Moore Street Tabernacle and Fairview Baptist Church with her family, becoming known for her beautiful smile and friendly personality.

She loved reading her Bible daily and sharing God’s goodness to all whom she met. She also enjoyed growing beautiful rose bushes, naming each one after her children. She thoroughly enjoyed her monthly luncheons with her cousins who were more like sisters to her. She was involved in prayer chain ministries that have reached many otherwise desperate individuals. She was delighted to see all of her children and grandchildren become saved. She will be greatly missed but we take comfort in knowing as Christians, we will see her again.

She is survived by two sons, Paul David Ball and wife Diana of Science Hill and James Wheeler and wife Nanette of Ashland; twin daughters, Brenda Browning and husband Ted of Flatwoods and Linda Hoffman and husband Gary of Ashland; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; special nieces and nephews; cousins; and a host of friends who loved her dearly.

She was comforted and blessed in her final days by a host of family and friends to whom we say thank you. Louise served the Lord through both fortunate and perilous times, as the fruit of her salvation was shown in her everyday life. She would want nothing more than you who are reading this to accept Jesus also, who is the Way, the Truth, the Life, and the only way to Heaven. A homegoing celebration will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 17, 2015, at Moore Street Tabernacle in Ashland with the Rev. Charles Williams, the Rev. Dan Pancake and the Rev. Mike Rice officiating. Burial will be in Ashland Cemetery. Friends will be received at noon Monday at the church. Friends may make contributions in her memory to Community Hospice, 1480 Carter Ave., Ashland, KY 41101. Lazear Funeral Home in Ashland is in charge of arrangements.
