Ann was the daughter of Rev. John Thompson and Ann Butler (Brayne) Spottswood-Thompson. Ann's mother, Ann Butler Brayne, widow of Governor Alexander Spottswood, was a great grandmother of Robert E. Lee through her first marriage. Ann Thompson married Francis Thornton IV in 1759. They lived at "The Falls", and inherited the nearby "Fall Hill" property from Francis III.
