Col. John Spotswood
Born in England, 1728, eldest son of Lt. Gov. Spotswood. Growing to manhood in Virginia, in 1745 John Spotswood married Mary Dandridge of "Elsing Green" in King William County, daughter of Unity West and William Dandridge. John and Mary Spotswood were parents of Alexander, John, Mary and Ann. In May 1756, John Spotswood wrote and signed his will in Spotsylvania County, being a man of considerable wealth even though still young. He died at his home plantation, "Newpost" south of Fredericksbusrg, in August 1758, and is buried here. The widow remarried and moved to Wiliamsburg. The sons, Alexander and John, were sent to Eton in England for schooling. Dr. Michael Frost descends from Alexander and his wife, Elizabeth (Washington) Spotswood.

Colonel John Spotswood, son of Colonial Govenor, Colonel Alexander Spotswood, is buried on the bluffs of Orange County, far above the flood plain of the Rapidan River, where he grew up as a child.
