He led his men until October 25, 1862, when he was commissioned Colonel and commander of the 113th Illinois Volunteer Infantry. He was wounded on May 22, 1863 during the Vicksburg, Mississippi Campaign, rose to brigade command, and was honorably mustered out on June 20, 1865. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious services during the war". He joined the Regular Army two years after the end of the Civil War, serving first as a Captain first in the 41st United States Infantry, then in the 12th United States Infantry. He resigned in 1874, and then served as a United States Customs official in Chicago, Illinois.
