Lucille King 85, of W. Main St., Sugarcreek, entered into the presence of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Thursday, June 4, 2015. She was born March 31, 1930, in Walnut Creek, Ohio, to the late Alvin and Alta (Hershberger) Gardner. She will be fondly remembered by her family as a fun-loving, nurturing Mother, Mother-in-law, Grandmother and Great Grandmother. Family was always important to her. Never one to worry or fret, she was a firm believer in the power of prayer. She was married to Harley King, who preceded her in death March 17, 2009. Lucille, or Lucy as she was known to all, spent most of her life as a wife, mother and homemaker, but also has a variety of jobs outside the home. Prior to marriage, her first employment was at Lenacher Cheese in Sugarcreek. She then spent several years at home until her children were in school followed by her position as postmaster in Otsego, Ohio, but her favorite job was as an aide at Union Hospital on the surgical floor serving others in their time of need. She also worked in the lab at Foremost Foods, managed the Sugarcreek Locker for her nephew and was employed at the Sugarcreek Goshen Dairy. She operated a bed and breakfast for many years when she and Harley resided on Mill St. Always fond of babies and young children, she eagerly awaited the arrival of each one and was readily available for babysitting and nurturing. Throughout her lifetime, Lucy created a home that was open to anyone at any time. She and Harley entertained and provided housing for many preachers, evangelists, missionaries, and family. In their retirement years, they welcomed into their home Megan Carrouthers, who resided with them for 10 1/2 years.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Debra Doll; four sisters; and an infant brother. She is survived by a daughter, Pam (Fred) Hartzler of Sugarcreek; and a son, Mike (Carol) King of Dundee; a son-in-law, Ted (Barb) Doll of Sugarcreek; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Private graveside services will be held on Monday, June 8, 2015, at Union Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Alpine Bible Church, 719 Dutch Valley Drive, Sugarcreek, Ohio, on Monday, June 8, 2015 from 4:30 - 6 p.m., at which time there will be a Celebration of Life Service with Pastor Byron Stewart officiating at 6 p.m. Arrangements are being handled by Smith-Varns Funeral Home at Sugarcreek
