Jacob Yoes Skelton was born May 1, 1901, the first of four children whom he would eventually outlive. (Margaret and George died as infants and Walter Jr. died of illness at age 26). At about the age of 9, Jacob pointed a rifle at himself and shot himself in the neck. He remembered the family dog licking up his blood. His father and several friends were able to stem the bleeding and save him, but the end result was he nicked a nerve that slightly shortened one leg and left him with a nervous tic the rest of his life. Married to Louise Mary Nabholz in 1930, their first son, James Albert, drowned in a creek shortly before his 2nd birthday. The last four children, Walter, Dan, Marion and David, all survived to adulthood with families of their own. Jacob had a habit of checking and double-checking all door locks before bedtime. He doted on all his grandchildren. Jacob died in his sleep in the early morning hours of July 11, 1967. He was buried at St. Joseph Cemetery with his mother, Laura on his left side. His wife, Louise, would occupy his right when she died in 1984.
