Born in Pennsylvania, Dorothy was the fifth of eleven children born to Edwin and Lena McClarin. The family moved to Buffalo when she was young. She married Edward Murphy in 1935. They had five children. While raising her children, Dorothy attend the University of Buffalo Law School. She graduated with a law degree in 1951, the only female in a class of 76 students. She was appointed to the Juvenile Legal Division when Family Court opened in 1962 and was employed until her retirement in 1977. She was a member of the University of Buffalo Law School Alumni Association, Republican Women's Clubs and Riverside Lioness Club.
