Born and raised in Shamokin, PA she was a long time resident of Hummelstown, PA. She retired as executive director of an agency of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Mary Lou was a member of St. Catherine Laboure Church in Harrisburg, PA and gave generously of her time to her community's HOA.
Daughter of the late Frank and Rita (Fennessy) Stroh, wife of the late John "Jack" McElwee, she is survived by a son John McElwee, a daughter Lucinda Cochrane, son-in-law John Cochrane, three sisters, Dr. Jane Barfield, Frances Marquette and Paula Murphy, a sister-in-law Mary Jane Barcavage, four grandchildren, Geoffrey (and wife, Katie) McElwee, Matthew McElwee, Thomas Cochrane and Delaney Cochrane, two great grandchildren, Cecilia McElwee and Makenzie Catina as well as many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 AM Thursday, May 31, 2018 at St. Catherine Laboure Church, 4000 Derry St., Harrisburg, PA. Burial will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery in Harrisburg.
